Computer Desks- How to Choose the Best Model For You
If you have just purchased a computer, your next important decision is what to put it on. Many people, especially people with laptops, are tempted to use whatever clear surface will work. But proper computer desks can do more than simply look professional. They can help your posture and minimize repetitive strain injuries, keep important supplies and files close at hand and even protect important parts of your computer so that it will be at lower risk of being damaged.
One thing you need to look at is what kind of computer you are using. Are you working mostly on a desk top model or will you be using a laptop to do your work. This is an important consideration since the model of desk you choose may be different. A laptop desk will usually consist of a flat surface to set the computer on and may also have a drawer or two to hold files or other supplies. A computer desk designed for a desktop model may have a pull down drawer for a keyboard, a separate cupboard to hold the CPU so that it is protected, and separate shelves for speakers.
Another factor to take into consideration is how much work space you will have. If you have a separate room to use you can find many beautiful pieces that will meet your needs. But if you live in an apartment or in a small home you will want a model which takes up much less space. If you have a large room that you will be using or if you are furnishing a traditional office, you can suites of matching furniture. This can include a computer desk, matching filing cabinets, book shelves and printer stands. They can be as elaborate or plain as you would like.
If you have a small room or if you will be using a room like a family room, you may want to consider an armoire style computer desk. This has doors that close and shut away your office. This allows you to use the computer when you need to but then shut it away so that you can use the room for other purposes. This can be fantastic if you are putting your computer desk in a spare bedroom.
Your personal style is an important factor. You want a desk that will fit in with other furniture in your home. Desks come in a variety of materials including traditional style wooden models and futuristic glass and metal versions. If you have a highly traditional style home, you do not want your computer desk to stick out from the furniture around it. You can often order a desk in a specific wood finish so that it will match your other furniture more closely. Many models are available in both solid wood and wood laminates which can increase your range of options and help you control the price you are paying for the desk.
Where will you be placing the desk in the room? This can also be an important consideration. There are models which are designed to fit in the corner of a room. They are usually L-shaped and allow you to use the most amount of work space while minimizing the amount of floor space that they take up. Keep in mind however that you may not like staring at a wall indefinitely and you may need to take into account where any windows are in the room, especially if the desk has a hutch.
Are you someone who has a lot of files? If you are, you may want to look at a computer desk which has added storage. This can include drawers or a hutch. Add-on or matching accessories are available such as filing cabinets. Hutches can also have cabinets which are good for storing CD’s or office supplies. Are you working on projects that require you to have some writing or work space? You may want to select a model that has an extension that will give you room to lay things out. Other features can include a raised area to set your monitor on that will put it at eye level. This can be a good way to minimize neck and eye strain. Ergonomics such as keyboard positioning and the level of the desktop are good things to look for.
Selecting a computer desk may seem like a difficult task but if you know where you will be putting the desk, what kind of computer it will hold, and how you will use your work space you can select a desk that will help you stay organized and increase your productivity.
